Robins snap up ex-League duo
Thursday 16 August
Two new signings have been added to the Ilkeston FC squad on the eve of their season opener against AFC Fylde at the New Manor Ground on Saturday.
Joining us for our first campaign at Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division level are goalkeeper Chris Martin and central defender Greg Pearson.
Martin, 22, has agreed a one-year deal following a successful trial after being released by League One Port Vale, where he made more than 70 Football League appearances.
Pearson, 19, comes in on similar terms from Huddersfield Town, having made the step up through the youth set-up to earn a senior contract with the Terriers.
“Both these lads will add vital strength to the squad and bring the kind of competition for places that I want,” said our delighted manager Kevin Wilson (pictured).
“You always want to have options and I think it reflects very well on us that we are attracting players who have previously been with Football League sides.”
Martin will go into competition with Ashley Timms, although Wilson says the new man will be given the nod against the Coasters at the weekend.
He added: “I think we have got two very good goalkeepers now and they will push each other hard.
“Chris has got good experience and has big potential, but the same can be said of Ashley Timms, who hasn’t really played much over the last couple of years. They have both got to battle hard for it now, which bodes well for us.”
Teenager Pearson’s first task will be to dislodge skipper Russell Cooke and Dan Partridge, who were so effective in the middle of our defence in the second half of last year.
“He’s a six footer who has a very good left foot and I feel he can add something,” said Wilson. “With Josh Hill leaving I felt we were a little light in there and this has addressed that.”
