Robins still seeking elusive first win

Saturday 25 August

Ilkeston FC are still searching for the first Evo-Stik Premier Division win after a second half strike sentenced them to a 1-0 defeat at Nantwich Town this afternoon.

According to Kevin Wilson, his weakened team - missing the injured Laurie Wilson, Ryan Wilson and Daryll Thomas - did enough to at least avoid defeat.

But he admitted: "We're still not firing as we should be and it's really important that we pick ourselves up and do the business against Eastwood Town on Monday. It's still early days but we do need to put our first win on the board."

With summer signing Greg Pearson making his first start for the club as a make-shift left back and Russell Cooke and Joe Maguire less than 100 per cent fit, it was always going to be a test of character for the Robins and Wilson was pleased enough with their first half efforts.

He added: "I thought we edged the first period but then conceded another sloppy goal soon after half time when they were allowed to come right through the middle at us from a goal-kick.

"I'm not happy about the goals we are conceding and although we did create chances and could have salvaged at least a draw, they were not of the clear-cut variety.

"I just don't feel the players are doing themselves full justice at the moment and I've made my feelings clear to them. I still have faith in their ability to step up to Premier Division level and do well but they need to start proving that really is the case."

There's always an extra edge to any local derby the Robins play against Eastwood but Wilson is urging the fans to turn up in force at the New Manor Ground on Monday afternoon (3pm) and play their part in getting that elusive first victory of the season.

• Ilkeston FC now know that they will be away to Coalville Town in their first-ever appearance in the FA Cup on Saturday September 8 after the First Division South club defeated Loughborough University 5-3 this afternoon.
