Six of the best as Robins return to action

Saturday 14 July

Kevin Wilson warned supporters and players alike "not to get carried away" after Ilkeston FC launched their pre-season programme with a resounding 6-0 away win against Leek Town.

It was a far cry from the tense affair when the two clubs last met in the Play-off Final in April because the impressive Robins' always held the upper hand in a one-sided contest.

"It was an excellent work-out in every respect," said the manager: "It was nice to see six different players get their names on the score-sheet - and to keep a clean sheet. And the key thing was that everyone got 45 minutes under their belt."

Wilson fielded different line-ups in each half and he added: "Although we were a bit sloppy at times, we also played a lot of neat football and overall, it was very encouraging. It was probably harder for the lads who went on at half time, knowing we were already 3-0 up, but everyone came out of it with credit.

"Having said that, it's crucial that no one gets carried away by this. We have a tough couple of weeks come up with a run of matches against League opposition and the priority is to build up our fitness and work on developing a pattern of play that we want to take into the new season."

Jack Watts pointed the Robins towards victory and also on target were Alex Ford, Daryll Thomas, Russell Peel and Andrew Osei-Siribour, before Gary Ricketts (pictured) rounded off the proceedings with a trademark header.

Matt Richards figured in the excellent afternoon's work for the Premier League newcomers and Ashley Timms and Ben Gathercole shared the goalkeeping duties.

Next up for Ilkeston FC is an attractive New Manor Ground clash with Sheffield United on Wednesday, when influential midfielder Laurie Wilson comes up against his dad Danny - the Blades' boss.
