Two-goal Ricketts as hungry as ever

Saturday 11 August

Kevin Wilson today warned Evo-Stik Premier Division defenders that they will still find Gary Ricketts “a right handful” - even though he celebrated his 37th birthday last month.

Ricketts topped the Ilkeston FC goal-charts last season with 23 goals and he showed last night that he’s back in the groove by returning from injury with a two-goal blast at Mickleover Sports.

The Robins chalked up a comfortable 3-0 success in their final pre-season game with Ricketts scoring twice in the first half and Will McCall on target after the break.

Said Wilson: “Overall I’m very happy with where we are at this stage and it’s certainly a boost to everyone to see Gary figuring among the goals.

“He might be a year older but nothing much has changed. He’s as hungry as ever to play his part a he’s such a great example to our younger players.

“Gary’s an absolute credit the way he looks after himself and if people think he might struggle in the Premier Division because of his age ... let them just think that.”

Dan Partridge and Laurie Wilson both got 45 minutes under their belts last night to confirm that they should be ready to face AFC Fylde at the New Manor Ground in next Saturday’s appetising opening League fixture.

Jamie Clarke also figured for the final 15 minutes and Wilson said: “With any luck we will have a full-strength squad available for the Fylde game and that’s the way I like it.

“I’m paranoid about picking up injuries in pre-season and although we’ve had a few knocks to content with, fortunately they’ve been nothing too serious.”

Trialist Chris Martin again played in goal for the Robins and Wilson has hinted that the former Port Vale player could well have a future at the New Manor Ground.
